Chapter 048: Mrs. Ye's Suspicions Escalate!
"Name."
"Ye Fuli."
"Age."
"19."
"Gender?"
"…Female."
Ye Fuli sat listlessly in the interrogation room, going through the motions of this routine procedure, clearly unfazed.
Before long, someone came to bail her out.
The person who came to bail her out was none other than He Ying, the pink-haired agent she knew from the underground boxing matches.
"Chief, a pink Ferrari just pulled up outside. A girl with pink hair got out, saying she's here to bail someone out."
The female police officer conducting Ye Fuli's interrogation frowned upon hearing the commotion outside.
She closed the file in her hands and looked up.
"Ye Fuli, you're still young. Learn to do something worthwhile. Don't end up like your parents, becoming regulars here! You know exactly what happened today. Don't think everyone else is stupid enough to fall for your lies."
Ye Fuli smiled faintly. "Officer, I already told you—it was just acting. Could a comb like that really be considered a murder weapon?"
"Stop grinning at me!"
Ye Fuli stopped smiling, but a shadow passed over her eyes.
Ever since she was a child, her scummy adoptive parents had frequented this place, practically treating it like their home. Thanks to those two pieces of trash, her most vivid childhood memory was doing homework on the benches here, eating cheap instant noodles.
Most of the officers here knew her.
Some were kind-hearted, offering her snacks and drinks, even tutoring her in her studies.
Others, however, would lecture her from on high, warning her not to follow in her parents' footsteps. They'd forbid their children from playing with her, claiming she carried criminal genes.
Of course, the latter were a very small minority.
"K1, what the hell were you thinking, getting yourself booked?" Her agent finished the paperwork and led her out of the station. "We weren't even apart for a few hours!"
Ye Fuli smiled faintly. "Just a little incident."
"I know you had a little incident!"
Her agent shrugged indifferently.
"It's nothing! I can handle even bigger messes than this. Even if you killed someone… Oh, and make sure no one saw you do it!"
She opened her handbag, pulled out a box of Wangzi cookies and a few lollipops, and shared them with Ye Fuli.
Ye Fuli was about to refuse, but Ye Zhen's face suddenly flashed through her mind.
She vaguely recalled Ye Zhen seemed to love these kinds of treats.
So, as if possessed, she accepted all these girly treats.
"Let's go! I drove here. I'll take you for a checkup and get you treated." The agent spoke with a lollipop in her mouth, her words muffled, as she casually pulled open the car door for Ye Fuli.
This time, Ye Fuli didn't refuse.
Once seated in the car, a sudden curiosity struck her: What kind of chaos must the Ye household be in right now?
She sent Huang Li a message, asking him to figure out a way to set up a camera so she could see what was happening.
……
…
At the Ye residence at that moment.
It was eerily quiet.
Mrs. Ye and Mr. Ye sat facing each other.
Driver Old Wu dared not sit down, standing humbly beside the sofa instead.
Also unable to sit were Huang Li, along with Huang Li's mother who had rushed over upon hearing the news, and… that kid named Zheng Jun.
Ye Zhen, the subject of today's discussion, sat slumped on a single sofa, her eyes vacant and her lips sealed.
Mrs. Ye took a deep breath and set her teacup down heavily.
"This is outrageous! How could such a thing happen in broad daylight!"
Ye Dad shook his head. "I still can't believe Ye Fuli would do something so irrational! She and Zhenzhen were such good friends—how could she suddenly want to kill her?"
Hearing this, Mrs. Ye's expression darkened.
She had, of course, already recalled Ye Fuli intercepting her car and declaring, "I am your biological daughter."
Before, she had refused to believe it!
But now, Ye Fuli had grown so brazen as to kidnap Ye Zhen in broad daylight, even threatening to kill her. This had planted deep doubts in Mrs. Ye's mind.
She instinctively turned to look at Ye Zhen, scrutinizing her features closely.
Truth be told, Ye Zhen bore little resemblance to her, nor did she resemble the child's father.
Ye Fuli, on the other hand, did bear a certain resemblance to her…
No, impossible.
Mrs. Ye decisively dismissed the thought.
That Ye Fuli was nothing but the daughter of a criminal from the slums. How could she possibly be her child? She wasn't nearly as well-behaved as Ye Zhen, and she'd even corrupted Ye Zhen!
There were countless people in the world who bore a slight resemblance to one another. What did Ye Fuli amount to?
"Today's incident is entirely our fault for not paying enough attention. We've caused you both worry and frightened Zhenzhen." Seizing the moment, Mrs. Huang stepped forward to apologize to the Ye family, making her stance clear.
Madam Ye finally shifted her gaze to her.
A faint smile touched her lips as she prepared to speak harshly, but her husband beat her to it.
Ye Dad hastily interjected, "It's not entirely Huang Li's fault! This happened so suddenly, no one could have foreseen it. Thankfully, nothing serious came of it, right?"
Madam Ye shot him a furious glare.
This husband of hers was utterly useless.
He'd just squandered a golden opportunity to demand a share of the profits from the Huang family with a single sentence.
"Our Zhenzhen was terribly frightened! And this happened even with your son accompanying her. How can we possibly feel comfortable entrusting our daughter to him after something like this?"
Ignoring her husband's frantic signals, Mrs. Ye voiced her concerns.
Mrs. Huang looked utterly embarrassed, forcing a bitter smile. "Yes, yes, yes. It's our fault! We should compensate Zhenzhen."
Huang Li, hearing this, quickly chimed in, "Right, right, my mom's absolutely right!"
"But our brother Li stepped in to help! That driver saw it too! If it weren't for him, do you think your precious Miss Ye Zhen would have come back unscathed?"
Zheng Jun looked utterly innocent.
He turned to look at Huang Li.
"Right, Brother Li?"
Huang Li twisted his mouth, thinking, You sure know how to pop up at the right moment! What business do you have speaking here?
"Oh, a heroic act? Well then, it seems we'll have to award your Brother Li a medal." Mrs. Ye sneered coldly. "I never knew protecting your own girlfriend counted as a heroic act!"
Zheng Jun maintained his innocent expression, casually remarking, "But Miss Ye Zhen isn't Brother Li's girlfriend now, is she?"
His gaze shifted back to Huang Li.
"Right, Brother Li? You mentioned before you weren't particularly fond of her."
Before Huang Li could respond, Mrs. Huang delivered a resounding slap across his face, barking, "What business is this of yours? Get out and wait outside!"
She had schemed relentlessly to curry favor with the Ye family and Mrs. Ye—all for the sake of a marriage alliance between the two families!
Now, this vague, ambiguous relationship—just a little more fuel, and it could become a done deal. And this blind fool dared to speak out of turn, shattering the illusion!
"Madam Ye, don't take this child seriously. He's not even part of the Huang family; his words carry no weight."
Madam Ye shot her a cold stare. "Whether he's one of your family is for you to decide. But matters concerning our two families are for me to decide. In my opinion, we should deliberate further. Show him out."
Receiving such a pointed dismissal, Mrs. Huang felt deeply displeased, yet she had no choice but to leave the Ye residence for the time being.
Once the parlor fell silent again.
Madam Ye rose and walked over to Ye Zhen, taking a seat beside her.
Examining Ye Zhen again at such close range, Mrs. Ye's frown deepened.
Tsk, she doesn't look like him. She really doesn't!
Neither her own features nor her husband's resembled this child's.
Could her beloved Zhenzhen truly not be her biological daughter?
"Mom, I'm tired. Can I go take a nap?" Ye Zhen's faint voice interrupted Mrs. Ye's thoughts.
The next moment, Mrs. Ye uttered words that sent a jolt through Ye Zhen's delicate frame:
"Zhenzhen, tomorrow you'll come with me to get a paternity test done."
